More freedom, challenges, environments, and bugs (the good kind) – Destructoid

Helldivers 2 Patch 1.001.002, also known as Escalation of Freedom, is the biggest update the game has received since it was released in early 2024. It introduces a new difficulty level, more enemies, additional biomes, with more detail added to current ones, and much more.

Escalation of Freedom is all about going bigger in Helldivers 2 in every way that feels right for the game. Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has taken great care to craft this update with player feedback in mind, meaning the new difficulty level will provide the kind of challenge players have been asking for on the game’s subreddit for months. It’s the difficulty and new biomes that I think will make the biggest splash with players.

Now, even more bugs can step on you

First and most importantly, this update adds a new difficulty mode. Super Helldive isn’t for the faint of heart. It adds even more enemies to missions and the biggest outposts you’ve ever seen. Each one contains five focal points you’ll have to destroy if you want to break the enemy and progress certain objectives.

Helldivers 2 Escalation of Freedom isn’t all doom and gloom with more enemies, though. It also adds a new swamp biome that looks absolutely stunning. To go alongside this, we have more environmental hazards, including Acid Storms that hammer you with acid rain, and Acid Fog.

The update has added new mission objectives, but I suspect we’ll see more of those over time as they’re brought up as part of Major Orders. As part of these, you’ll be facing off against new enemies. New soldiers like the Impaler are joining the ranks of the Automatons and Terminids to ruin your day and prevent the spread of managed democracy.

Adding to the strain against managed democracy are some of the weapon updates in Helldivers 2 Escalation of Freedom. For example, my beloved Incendiary Breaker now has less ammo and a higher recoil to make fighting bugs that much more difficult. But the buff for the Orbital 120mm HE Barrage should feel great in a pinch as a tradeoff.

While Helldivers 2 Escalation of Freedom has some major new features, I also want to highlight the balance changes that have been made. We’ve not had a decent set of these for weeks; this update has dozens. You can read through all of them in the official patch notes, including which of your favorite weapons and Stratagems have been nerfed.

The balance changes and fixes that stand out to me include: “Gunship Patrols are now less frequent and the amount of ships are reduced,” and “Resolved an issue where transitions into jog and sprint animations would be delayed if spammed.” Both of these have given me a lot of hassle in the past. Some fans seem to have an issue with the new grief-kicking solution, but we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.

I’ve also noticed that the only stealth build in Helldivers 2 has been nerfed with this update thanks to this update to the Ballistic Shield. “No longer blocks the enemies line of sight.” You’ll just have to sneak up on enemies from behind until something more viable is added with a Warbond.

The last thing I noticed is that the “Kill 5” Personal Order is no longer listed as a known issue but also hasn’t been listed as a fix. This is either an oversight or the Personal Order has just become canon. We’ll know for sure if it ever pops up to misdirect us during a Major Order again.
